Carcassonne

A town of the Aude Depratement, Carcassone is a famous French town that has gone through fortifications under Napoleon and eventually the government decided to demolish the fortified cite’ under a decree in 1849, due to all the changes that had been made to it. However there was much campaigning to preserve the construct and renovation was carried out at a later time. The fortification now consists of 53 towers.

The Pont Marengo bridge crosses the Canal du Midi and leads the way to the railway station. It is a busy and popular tourist spot as canal boats go along the waterway. The bridge gets its name from the event of Napoleon defeating the Austrians in 1800, this being known as the Battle of Marengo.

The Lac de la Cavayere is an artificial lake close to the city centre. The lake was in fact linked to a 23m high dam, and is referred to as Carcassonne Beach in English. The purpose of the construction of the dam back in the 1980s was in response to a forest fire that struck the area in 1985. the dam serves the purpose of a recreational area with its beaches and bathing areas surrounded by a variety of plant life that strikes the eye. Boats can be rented, it is a prime picnic location and a game of crazy golf is also on the menu.

The national monument for the city is the Carcassone Cathedral, and holds importance as the seat of the city’s Roman Catholic Bishop.

The more modern part of the city opposite the Aude River is famous for its textiles, shoe and rubber manufacturing industries, which go as far back as the Middle Ages.

The Carcassone Airport takes flights to various European destinations, including Dublin, Stansted and Liverpool.
